Dan is an international trade and transportation attorney that provides end-to-end counsel across Canada-U.S., North American and global supply chains. This trade counsel includes customs classification and compliance, utilization of preferential trade agreements such as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), tariff mitigation and exclusions, procurement negotiations and agreements including Buy America/Buy American, and anti-dumping/countervailing duty issues. He also advises in the negotiating of transportation and procurement agreements, managing trusted trader and cargo security programs, and addressing issues at ports-of-entry. Dan also has experience with economic development organizations and governments regarding large cross-border investment and expansion projects.
Dan is the Associate General Counsel at Cenovus Energy, one of the leading integrated energy providers from production, midstream and refining operations. He previously spent nearly a decade and a half in private practice leading a Canada-U.S. practice and was a member of international trade and transportation practice groups. Dan is the Honorary Consul of the Government of Canada to Ohio. Dan’s unique Canada-U.S. experience encompasses serving in the governments of Canada and the United States, private practice and academia. He served as an officer in Canada’s foreign ministry where he worked towards improving North America’s borders and ports-of-entry. This included managing a network of government departments including Public Safety Canada (RCMP and CBSA), Global Affairs Canada, Immigration Canada, Industry Canada, Transport Canada, Natural Resources Canada and others focused on securing and managing the U.S.-Canada border and facilitating regulatory cooperation. Dan re-entered private law practice and led the Canada-U.S. practice for an AM Law 200 law firm with offices throughout the U.S. and Ontario. For nearly a decade, Dan was a visiting professor of law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and managed a lab that served as a legal adviser to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard. Dan was a career law clerk to United States District Judge Peter C. Economus in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio where he participated in various civil and criminal litigation matters. His other prior legal experience includes labor and employment and commercial issues.
Dan was appointed by the US Secretary of Commerce to serve as a member of the District Export Council (DEC) for the Northern District of Ohio. Dan also was appointed by the Governor of Ohio as a Life Member of the Association of Ohio Commodores; he is the U.S. Vice President for the North American Strategy for Competitiveness (NASCO); and, a board member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada (AMCHAM Canada). Dan is the President of the Ohio-Canada Business Association (Ohio-Can).
Dan holds a B.A. from The Ohio State University and a J.D. from Case Western Reservice University School of Law. He also is an alumnus of Miami University’s John E. Dolibois Center in Luxembourg and St. Petersburg State University Summer Law Institute in the Russia Federation.
