STATEMENT -- AmCham Canada welcomes the news that both the Canadian and U.S. governments are working toward a new trade agreement within the next 30 days. Cross-border trade drives jobs, innovation, and economic growth on both sides of the border. Getting this right matters.
But some problems cannot wait. In less than two weeks, companies will be required to make the first payment under Canada’s Digital Services Tax. That payment includes retroactive obligations going back to 2022. This creates immediate financial risk for businesses and increases the threat of U.S. retaliation. We are urging the Government of Canada to pause enforcement now before real damage is done.
We are encouraged by the momentum toward a deal and believe it must address the DST. A clear, fair, and predictable digital trade framework will benefit workers, creators, and consumers across North America.
