On July 21, 2021, President Joseph Biden nominated David L. Cohen, Senior Advisor to CEO Brian Roberts at Comcast Corporation, to serve as U.S. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Canada. Mr. Cohen has worked at Comcast for since 2002, serving in several different roles, including, Chief Diversity Officer, Senior Executive Vice President and head of the entity’s operations in corporate communications, legal affairs, government and regulatory affairs, public affairs, corporate administration, corporate real estate and security, and community impact. Prior to his work at Comcast, Mr. Cohen served as a partner in and Chairman of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, a leading Philadelphia law firm. He also was Chief of Staff for Philadelphia Mayor, Ed Rendell, who helped lead the city away from the brink of bankruptcy in the early 1990s.
Mr. Cohen serves on many nonprofit boards, including as a member of the Trustee Board and the Executive Committee of Penn Medicine, the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and the national board of the National Urban League. Additionally, he is Chair of the national board of City Year and its Executive Committee.
Mr. Cohen has received numerous awards for his civic and charitable activities. He was awarded Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Drexel University. Rider University, Rowan University, and Rohrer College of Business. Cohen graduated from Swarthmore College with a BA and with a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School summa cum laude.
In response to his nomination by President Biden, Mr. Cohen stated “I am honored to be nominated as ambassador to Canada, and thank President Biden for the opportunity to serve my country and to represent him.” He also added “If confirmed, I look forward to working with our neighbors in Canada, and continuing to develop and grow what is a very strong and important relationship as we continue to fight the pandemic and build our economies back stronger.”
