Statement from Rick Tachuk, President, American Chamber of Commerce in Canada
“The American Chamber of Commerce in Canada is deeply concerned about the Canadian government’s continued push for digital trade policies that put our economic relationship with the United States at risk. The Digital Services Tax (DST) and the Online Streaming Act are clear trade barriers that unfairly target U.S. businesses, undermine investment in Canada, and ultimately hurt Canadian consumers.
Yesterday, the U.S. Trade Representative nominee warned that digital trade barriers won’t be ignored. Canada’s insistence on moving forward with DST despite opposition from allies and partners could lead to serious economic consequences, including retaliatory measures from the U.S. The stakes are high.
At a time when Canada and the U.S. should be strengthening economic ties, these policies are driving a wedge between us. We strongly urge the Canadian government to reverse course before these self-inflicted barriers cause long-term damage to our trade relationship. The American Chamber of Commerce in Canada remains committed to working with policymakers on both sides of the border to promote a fair, competitive, and open digital marketplace that benefits businesses, artists, and consumers on both sides of the border.”
