President-elect Donald Trump's plan to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian products highlights the importance of both Canada and the United States coming together to address long-standing trade irritants.
In light of this serious threat, we encourage the Government of Canada to work collaboratively with U.S. officials to enhance North American security and to address issues at the border.
Canada must also proactively re-examine other public policy priorities that may provoke further retaliatory measures. These include the unilateral implementation of a digital services tax (DST) and the discriminatory Online Streaming Act. Further, the federal government needs to demonstrate a clear roadmap to achieving the 2% defence spending commitment that NATO members have long been asked to contribute.
In the interest of preserving the strongest bilateral trade relationship in world history and maintaining highly integrated supply chains, it is vital that the Canadian government work proactively and constructively with the incoming Trump administration on our shared priorities of strengthening North American prosperity, security and making life more affordable for workers, businesses and families.
