Jason Hale

Partner, Cross Border Personal Tax, Doane Grant Thornton LLP

Jason Hale helps clients navigate complex cross-border personal tax issues by ensuring U.S. tax compliance while delivering thoughtful personal, estate, and structural planning solutions. Drawing on his in-depth knowledge of cross-border taxation and tax efficiencies, he works closely with individuals subject to U.S. personal tax obligations to ensure they take full advantage of available exemptions and planning opportunities.

Well-connected within both the business community and the firm, Jason takes a holistic, client-centered approach to every engagement. He regularly collaborates with colleagues across disciplines to address specific client needs and deliver integrated solutions. As Leader of the Cross-Border Personal Tax Team for the Atlantic region, he is exposed to a wide range of U.S.–Canada cross-border tax scenarios, allowing him to continually refine and apply efficient strategies. Each year, he helps approximately 1,500 U.S. individuals minimize unexpected tax consequences—whether they’re dealing with dual residency or citizenship, managing compliance in multiple jurisdictions, or structuring cross-border business activities.

With more than 23 years of professional experience, building strong, trusted client relationships has always been his top priority. This begins with taking the time to understand his clients’ teams, businesses, and family dynamics, and being consistently accessible—whether for strategic tax planning or more personal conversations. By truly knowing his clients, Jason is able to plan proactively, protect their interests, and avoid costly issues down the road.

Beyond his client work, Jason serves as Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce Atlantic Chapter, where he helps businesses succeed in international trade. He is also committed to advancing the profession by presenting and lecturing on U.S.–Canada tax matters across the country and mentoring younger colleagues in his day-to-day work.

Outside of the office, Jason is passionate about hockey and community involvement. He previously served as President of the Bedford Minor Hockey Association and as Regional Director for the Halifax East Region with Hockey Nova Scotia.
