The American Chamber of Commerce in Canada – Quebec Chapter is presenting NAFTA 2.0 Panel Series / Session 2, part of a series of conferences throughout 2017 on the NAFTA treaty and cross-border trade. As AmCham’s primary mission is the promotion of cross-border trade, the NAFTA treaty sits at the very centre of the bilateral trade strategy.

This panel will include the Honorable Bruce Heyman, former Ambassador of the United States in Canada, the Honorable Raymond Bachand, Special advisor to the Quebec Government and Mr. John Parisella will be our moderator. The panelists will discuss how the negotiations on NAFTA are progressing and how Canadian and Quebec companies can use these negotiations to their advantage. In the age of the new economy, relationships between Canada and the United States can gain from changes. What should companies of all sizes, from start-ups to mid-market companies and multinationals anticipate and what are the strategies they can put in place to ensure that they remain competitive and successful.

The panelists will also discuss the main concerns of companies on both sides of the borders in the actual political context and how they should prepare for the next round. Finally, they will address the general context of the negotiations; where is the bargaining power and how can Canada optimize its influence. 

The conference will be held primarily in English with Q&A in both French and English.  A continental breakfast will be served.

Our Panelists 

The Honorable Bruce Heyman

Mr. Bruce Alan Heyman is an American businessman and the former United States Ambassador to Canada. Prior to becoming Ambassador, Heyman served as a board member for the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Foundation.  He also served as an advisor to the Fix the Debt CEO Council of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. 

On September 19, 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Heyman to be the U.S Ambassador to Canada. Heyman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 12, 2014. As the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, Heyman became a member of the Fullbright Canada Board of Directors.In 2014 and 2016, Heyman was named one of the Top 50 Most Powerful Business People by Canadian Business.

In January 2017, he announced that he was stepping down as the U.S. Ambassador to Canada.

The Honorable Raymond Bachand

Mr. Bachand sat as a Member of Parliament for the Liberal parties in the National Assembly from 2005 to 2012. From 2009 to 2012, he served as Minister of Finance while also serving as Minister of Revenue during the last two years.  

As a result, he has actively contributed to Québec and Canada’s visibility and profile abroad by implementing Québec strategies in research and innovation, aeronautics, the environment, and green technologies; by helping initiate negotiations for a free trade agreement between Canada and the European Union and economic missions to the United States, Europe, India, China, Russia, and Israel; and by developing the integrated financial framework for Québec’s Plan Nord.

In addition to a thriving career in the public and private sectors, Mr Bachand has served on numerous boards of directors. He is also a special advisor to the province of Québec and American companies, as well as political authorities and the Canadian and American governments. 


John Parisella

John Parisella is a well-known business and political figure in Quebec, widely recognised in recent years for his astute and deep knowledge of American politics.
Mr Parisella has been at the centre of Quebec politics in his career as director-general of the Liberal Party of Quebec and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Premier of Quebec. He has been the President and CEO of one of Quebec's leading advertising firms and in recent years Delegate General of Quebec in New York. He comments widely on American political affairs.
